The legend has that Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati decided to exhibit their dancing skills in order to prove their supremacy.  Lord Brahma judged the cosmic dance of this divine couple in Thiruvalangadu, but failed to reach into any conclusion about the dancing skills of this couple and assigned the task to Lord Vishnu.  Lord Vishnu constructed an elegant Natana Sabha (Dancing Hall) for this celestial couple in Thiru Chitrakoodam and they performed their dancing skills before Lord Vishnu.  While the divine couple were performing their dancing skills Lord Shiva’s earring slipped down on the ground, but Lord Shiva tactfully picked up the earring with his leg and placed it back on his ear.  This particular dancing posture of Lord Shiva (Urdha Thandavam) made him declared as winner of the spectacular cosmic dancing show.

This temple remains open from 6.00AM to 12.00PM in the morning and 4.00PM to 9.00PM in the evenings.
