Thirukottiyur is one of the 108 Divya Desams of Lord Vishnu located in Madurai, Tamil Nadu.  This is one of the oldest temples of Lord Vishnu also of known as Badri of South, famous for its stunning architectural and craftsmanship.





Presiding deity – Moolavar Sri Ugra Mellanayan Perumal, Utsavar – Thiru Sowmya Narayana Perumal with his consort Goddess Sri Thirumamagal Nachiyar/Nilamamagal.

Significance – Birth place of Thirukottiyur Nambi




Udayavar Ramanujar arrived on this sacred land 18 times to learn the Ashtakshara Mahamantra from Thirukottiyur Nambi.   Finally, on his 18th expedition to Thirukottiyur Nambi advised the Mahamantra, an elixir for liberation from the cycles of Birth and death to Udayavar and he was instructed to keep this sacred chant within him.   But Udayavar revealed the nectar like the truth of Ashtakshara Mantra as a way to attain eternal bliss to the mass against the wishes of Thirukottiyur Nambi.   Udayavar wished for the welfare of entire living being on the earth to attain Salvation ‘The Abode of Lord Sriman Narayana’.  He climbed up the majestic Rajagopuram of this temple and publicized the great Maha Mantra to the mass.

The legend has that all the deities and Sages worshipped Lord Vishnu on this sacred land to get rid of the demon Hiranyakashipu and his atrocities.  Sage Kadamba worshipped Lord Vishnu on this sacred land had the desire to envision Lord in His half-man and half-lion form.  Lord Brahma instructed the celestial architect Vishwakarma to build a temple on its place and provided an idol of Lord Sowmya Narayana to Sage Kadamba.




This temple remains open from 6.00AM to 11.00AM in the morning and 4.30PM to 7.30PM in the evenings.
