Thiru
Murkka Nayanar was born in an agriculturist family in Thiruverkadu. Thiruverkadu
is situated on the northern river banks of Pali in Kanchi. Kachipuram was the
capital city of Pallava Dynasty; it is one of the holiest places known as
‘Mokshapuri’.
Thiru
Murkka Nayanar was a zealous devotee of Lord Shiva – Sri Vedapureeshwarar and
his consort Goddess Balambikai. He engaged in the self – less service to
devotees of Lord Shiva. He took good
care of devotees of Lord and served them with finest meal. His self-less
service attracted more and more devotees in his house, he found immense
happiness in serving them. He tirelessly served his guests and anything left
over consumed happily. In this way, he
spent all his wealth in serving the devotees of Lord. Soon he found no resources left to serve the
devotees of Lord.
Thiru
Murkka Nayanar was not discouraged, he firmly believed in the service to
Lord. He took the unpleasant
circumstances in his life as a challenge.
He was good at gambling, he earned money through gambling without violating
the ethics. He travelled through the
villages searching for gamblers and the money earned by this means was
faithfully utilized in the service of devotees.
He continued his journey to Lord Shiva temples and visited Thiruvarur
Sri Tyagaraja Temple on his way to Thirukudanthai Sri Sara Parameshwara Temple.
Thiru Murkka Nayanar carried
out his altruistic service all through his life and finally attained the Abode
of Lord Shiva.
In the
Tamil month Karthikai – Moolam is widely celebrated as Guru Puja day, the day
Thiru Murkka Nayanar attained the abode of Lord Shiva.
