Jai Sriman Narayana !!
Wishing my blog readers 'Happy Vishu' !!
Mesha Sankrati is the beginning of
the New Year in the traditional Hindu Solar Calendar, the transition of sun to
Mesha/Aries.
One
of the important events of this day is 'Kanikanal'. On the previous day of the
Vishu the 'Kani orukkal'/ 'Kani Koottal' (preparation for the Vishnukani) takes
place. As an initial process, beautiful Rangoli are drawn in front of the deity by
the senior member in the family and arrange the for 'Vishu Kani' to give a promising
look with a plate full of raw rice, mirror (Aranmula Kannadi), pulses, fruits,
Vegitables, earthen lamps, flowers (Kani Poo - eyellow flower), two pieces of
coconut one is filled with the coins and other half is filled Gold and precious
stones. It is believed that the vibrant
look of the Vishnu Kani brings all the happiness, prosperity all through the
year.
In
the early morning during Brahma Muhurtham (3.00AM to 5.00AM), the senior member
of the family greet and receive the rest of the family members to have
an elaborate view of the auspicious 'Vishu Kani' prepared on the previous day. The
Kani Kanal begins with paying obeisance to Lord Sriman Narayana and gets
introduced to each one of the bright and colorful things on the 'Vishu Kani'.
The Kanikanal process ends with the 'Vishu Kai Neetam' – a token of love given by the senior
member to all the members in the family.
The
celebration of Vishu takes place with lot of fanfare and vigor in all parts of
Kerala. The celebrations continues with bursting crackers, wearing new clothes
and an elaborate meal with all the family members in the afternoon called
'Vishu Sadhya' .
Once again 'Happy Vishu to all of you. !!!'
Jai Sriman Narayana !!
