The temple architecture and the sculpture reveal the exquisite craftsmanship.

Significance – The divine cow Kamadhenu worshipped Lord Shiva in this sacred place.  In this temple initial veneration takes place to Goddess Giriraja Kanyakai.  Dakshaprajapathy conducted a Yagna in an unconventional manner and the consequences made him to shed tears of regret and never-ending grief.  Thus, this place has got its name Thakkolam, it symbolizes Thakkan’s  (Daksha’s) Olam (cries).    There is a perennial spring oozing through the mouth of the Lord Nandikeshwara originated from the feet of Lord made this place known as ‘Thiruvooral’.

Dakshaprajapathi conducted an atypical Yagna in a grand scale without inviting Lord Shiva; the purpose of Yagna was to prove his superiority over Lord Shiva.  Though he married off one of his daughter Dakshayani (Sati Devi) to Lord Shiva, his animosity against the Lord remained the same.  He invited all the deities and sages for the grand scale Yagna and left out Lord Shiva uninvited.  Dakshayini who was well aware of the ruin of his father, in order to protect him from the annihilation, she arrived at the Yagna arena without the consent of Lord.    Regrettably, Dakshaprajapathi failed to receive his daughter with honor instead he insulted her and brought disgrace to Lord Shiva too.  Consequently, Dakshayani sacrificed her life in the Yagna fire.  Lord Shiva sent Veerabhadra a self manifestation of Lord Shiva to punish Dakshaprajapathi and replaced his head with a goat’s.  Hence, Dhakshaprajapathi’s self-esteem shattered and prayed to Lord for forgiveness. The most compassionate Lord blessed Dhakshaprajapathi and pardoned his outrageous acts.

Another legend has that Sage Uditya’s son happened to see the holy cow Kamadhenu grazing near his hermitage.  He requested Kamadhenu to assist him in his Yagna procedures.   Kamadhenu refused his order saying that it was not possible to follow him without the consent of Lord Indra.  Sage was angry at Kamadhenu and cursed her to be born on Earth as an ordinary domesticated animal with no divinity in her.   In turn, Kamadhenu also cursed the Sage to be engaged in treacherous acts.  Sage Uditya arrived in Thakkolam at the advice of Maharishi Narada and underwent severe penance praying to Lord Shiva and performed sacred bath to Lord Nandikeshwarar.  The holy cow Kamadhenu also performed sacred bath of Lord Shiva pouring her milk on the Linga.  At last, Sage Uditya’s son and holy cow Kamadhenu got rid of their curses and transformed into their original form with the blessings of Lord.

This temple remains open from 7.00AM to 10.AM in the morning and 5.00PM to 8.00PM in the evenings.
