Eyarkon Kalikama Nayanar was born in Thiruperumangalam, one of the flourished lands in Choza Kingdom.  He was an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva; he served as a commander-in-chief in the army of Chozha King.  Though he was in a prominent position, he always had the kindheartedness to serve the devotees of Lord.

Eyarkon Kalikama Nayanar happened to hear that Sundara Murthy Nayanar a zelous devotee of Lord used to utilize Lord Shiva as a messenger to his wife Paravai Nachiyar  to clear the difference of opinion in their domestic issues between Sundarar and his wife   Paravai Nachiyar, she was also equally devoted to Lord.  Eyarkon Kalikama Nayanar felt extremely depressed at this thought of Lord of Lords serving as a messenger for Sundarar, nothing important but for clearing the silly issues between the couple.  He visualized Lord walking all the way through the rough pathways from Tiruvarur to Sundarar’s home.  It infuriated Eyarkon Kalikama Nayanar and lost his love and devotion to Sundarar.

Eyarkon Kalikama Nayanar had severe pain in abdomen; he was shrunken with the irrepressible excruciating pain in his stomach.  He was earnestly prayed to Lord; compassionate Lord appeared in his dream and stated that only Sundara Murthy Nayanar could treat the colic disease of Eyarkon Kalikama Nayanar. Unfortunately, Kalikama Nayanar was totally against the wish of Lord, he preferred to die instead of getting cured by Sundarar and exposed his accumulated anger against Sundarar.

Sundarar came to know about Kalikama Nayanar’s reason for resentment towards him and realized his own mistake, he solemnly prayed to Lord for forgiveness.  In the meantime, Lord appeared in Sundarar’s dream and instructed him to leave at once to Thiruperumangalam to heal Eyarkon Kalikama Nayanar’s illness.

Eyarkon Kalikama Nayanar was totally depressed at the thought of Sundarar’s visit to cure his illness.  He decided to give up his life as an alternative of receiving any kind of treatment from Sundarar.  He took a dagger and killed himself.  After seeing the awful death of Kalikama Nayanar, his wife also decided to follow him.  Immediately, she heard a knock at the door and found Sundarar at the door.  She insisted the people around her to keep the dead body of her husband in a safe place, instructed them not to show any grief outwardly.    The chaste wife of Kalikama Nayanar received Sundarar with utmost reverence at this moment of bereavement too.  Sundarar with lot of anxiety enquired about Kalikama Nayanar’s health conditions and revealed his eagerness to cure his illness.  Kalikama Nayanar’s devout wife good-naturedly answered to Sundarar that her husband’s health has improved for good and fast asleep.  But Sundarar sincerely informed her about his purpose of visit and he wanted to see Eyarkon Kalikka Nayanar at the earliest.  Finally, Eyarkon Kalika Nayanar’s wife took Sundarar to the place where his dead body was kept.  Sundarar was utterly shocked to see Kalikama Nayanar in the pool of blood.  He authentically   prayed to Lord and lamented at the death of Kalikama Nayanar.   Sundarar rose on his feet, took the dagger on his hand and was about to kill himself, immediately Eyarkon Kalikama Nayanar got his life back and caught up Sundarar’s hand.   Eyarkon Kalikama Nayanar realized the self-less nature of Sundarar, both the devotees praised on each other and prostrated at each others feet, they together praised the glories of the Lords of Lord.

Eyarkon Kalikama Nayanar and Sundarar visited Thiruppunkur Temple of Lord Shivalokanathanr, Sundar sung praising the unbounded glories of Lord.  Sundara Murthy Nayanar in one of his compositions mentioned the graciousness of Kalikama Nayanar.  They together resumed their spiritual journey to Tiruvarur – Sri Tyagaraja Swamy Temple and worshipped Lord here.  Later, Eyarkon Kalikama Nayanar returned his home town Thiruperumangalam and spent rest of his life in serving the devotees of Lord.

In the Tamil month Ani – Revathi is widely celebrated as ‘Guru Puja’ day in all temples of Lord Shiva, the day Thiru Eyarkon Kalikama Nayanar attained the Abode of Lord Shiva.
