Thiru Uruthira Pachupathi Nayanar/Rudra Pasupathi Nayanar was born in a Brahmin family of Vedic Scholars. He was born in Thiruthalayur, one of the flourished lands in the Kingdom of Choza. Rudra Pasupathi Nayanar was a fervent devotee of Lord Rudra – Lord Pasupathinathar, he found immense pleasure in praising Lord Rudra by chanting the Shiva Panchakshara Mantra, Rudram etc..
Pasupathi Nayanar made a practice of chanting Rudram, one of the most purifying holy hymns of Lord Shiva standing on the water up to neck deep. He continued this remarkable divine performance in the early morning hours and evening with utmost devotion and faith. The compassionate Lord pleased at the unparalleled devotion of Rudra Pasupathi Nayanar. Nayanar attained the Abode of Lord Shiva with his austere life and perpetual devotion to Lord.
In the Tamil month Purattasi – Ashwini is widely celebrated as Guru Puja day in Thiruthalayur.
