Jai Sriman Narayana !!

Jaya Jaya Sankara Hara Hara Sankara !!

The full moon day in the Tamil month Aippasi / Kartik Pournami is an ausapcious day to perform Annabhishekam to Lord Shiva.  In most of the Shiva temples Mahajala Puja, Abhishekam, and Maha Mangala Harathi are performed to Lord.

The reproduced below is an interesting write – up about how the Grand festival of Annabhishekam came into existence in Lord Brahadeeshwara Temple, Gangaikonda Cholapuram.   Source:  Sage of Kanchi.

In the summer of 1986, near-attendants of Maha Swamigal went by lorry to Haridwar and fetched a number of sizable copper cans (in hundreds), filled with water from the River Ganges, with the idea that the Guru might use the holy water for his bath, oblations etc..  On their return, they placed the cans filled with the holy water before Maha Swamigal.  The great Guru smiled and replied to his devoted attendants “About a thousand years ago, The King Rajendra Chola built a grand Shiva Temple at Gangaikonda-Cholapuram, consecrated a huge Shivalingam in the temple and desired to perform Abhishekam to Brahadeeshwara Linga with the holy water of Ganga.  Carry some of these cans to Gangaikonda-Cholapuram and perform Abhishekam to Lord Brahadeeshwara.  Only after that, I shall use the remaining water brought for my sake.”  The orders were duly carried out by his devoted attendants.  Few months later, His Holiness Sri Sri Chandrasekhara Saraswathy Swamigal instructed his attendants to perform Annabhishekam (sacred bath to Linga with cooked rice) to Lord Brahadeeshwara.  Thus, the practice of Annabhishekam came into existence and grew into a grand festival in the Shiva temples.  With this scared ceremony the land had sumptuous rain with the blessings of Lord Brahadheeshwara.
