Muktheshwar Dham / Muktheshwar temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva situated 51km from Ninital, Uttaranchal. This temple is located at the elevation of 2,285 mts high above the sea level in the hills of Lohit Giri, Nainital district in the state of Uttarakhand. This is one of the old temples situated at the peak of Muktheshwar Hill embellished with lush green and in a serene ambiance. It is believed that Naini Lake where Lord Shiva performed his Rudra Thadava with the lifeless body of Sri Uma, as an aftermath of the Yaga performed by Daksha. The unblemished beauty and spectacular view of Himalayan range from this temple attracts millions and millions of pilgrims to this temple. The famous temples of Nanda Devi, Nanda Kot, Nandaghunti, Trishul and Panchachuli also visible from the peak of Muktheshwar, the Nilkanta Peak bear a resemblance to Lord Shiva and Trishul mountain stands majestically as a a sign of Trident of Lord Shiva. This is one of the oldest temples of Lord Shiva existing from the date back to 350 years. The legend has that Lord Shiva killed a demon and provide salvation at this peak, thus the temple has got its name ‘Muktheshwar’.
The Presiding deity of this temple is Lord Shiva worshipped in the form Linga made of white marble. This temple also enshrines Lord Vishnu, Lord Brahma, Lord Ganesha, Goddess Parvati, Lord Nandi and Lord Anjaneya. The reverberating sounds of temple bells from the hills of Mukteshwar can be heard at an extensive distance create a divine environment.
