This is one of the oldest temples existing from the date bact to 1100 years is located in Bhuvaneshwar (Ekamratha Theertham – Brahma Puranam), Orrissa was built by King Yayati Kesari in 7th century. In this temple Lord Shiva is worshipped in the form of a self manifested Linga. The temple carries exceptionally beautiful carvings, structures and architectural style reveals the remarkable creaftsmanship of Kalingas. This gigantic temple occupies massive acres of land. The spacious courtyard of this temple comprises many shrines of Gods and Goddesses. The majestic ‘Simha Dwara’ – Lion Gate is the entry point to this temple.
In the Garbha Griha – Sanctum Sanctorum of the temple Lord Shiva is worshipped in the form of a self manifested Linga made of granite stone. There are images of Lord Ganesha, Lord Karthikeya and Goddess Parvathy also can be seen. In order to strengthen the worship of Lord Hara and Lord Hari, there is Trident (Trishul) and Dice (Chakra) symbols positioned at the entrance of this temple. The huge courtyard holds Yajya Sala, Bhoga Mandapam and Natya Sala.
The legend has that; Lord Shiva diclosed his personal opinion to Goddess Parvathy during their private conversation that Ekamratha Theertham is one of his most favorite place to reside than Varanasi. Goddess Parvathy was curious to visit Ekamratha Theertham; she disguised herself into a cowherd woman and left to Bhuvaneshwar. In the meantime, there was two demon named Krithi and Vasa fallen for Goddess and requested to marry them. Goddess Parvathy affectionately asked them to carry her on their shoulder. The two demons sincerely carried Goddess Parvathy on their shoulders; Goddess crushed the two demons with her weight effortlessly. After killing the two demons by Goddess Parvathy in order to quench her thirst Lord Shiva created a Lake – Bindu Sagar. He himself assumed the form as ‘Krithivasa’ / Lingaraj in Ekamratha Theertham came to known as Bhuvaneshwar in the later years.
