Jaya Jaya Sankara Hara Hara Sankara !!
This is one of the oldest temples dedicated to Lord Shiva existing from the date back from 7th Century and it is located in Thirumayilai Shivasthalam, later came to known as Mylapore - Chennai. This enormous temple enshrines many Gods and Goddesses was built during the regime of Pallava Dynasty. It is constructed in Dravidiyan style. The Kings of Vijayanagara also made contributions to this temple in the form of tall and remarkable Gopurams one facing east and other facing the Temple Tank on the southern side. This is one of the 24th Thevara Shivasthalam situated in the South.

Festival: Brahmostavam - This is one of the grand festivals continues for 9 consecutive days. During this period, the idol of Lord Kapaleeshwara and Karpakambal was taken out for a procession in their different celestial vehicles. Arupathu Moovar festival – The 63 Shaiva saints known as Nayanmar taken out of the temple for a procession with the Lord Kapleeshwarar and Goddess Karpakambal. Car Festival – Procession of Lord Kapaleeshwarar with Karpakambal in a chariot decorated in a grand manner. The Celestial Marriage of divine couple and float Festival are also one of the famous festivals of this temple.

The legend has that, Goddess Parvati as peacock worshipped Lord Shiva in this temple. Lord Brahma underwent severe penance praying to Lord Shiva, in order to get rid of the curse and seeking blessings to begin ‘Creation’. Sage Shukracharya underwent penance and got his eye sight back which was lost when Lord Vishnu incarnated as Vamana. Poompavai Patikam composed by Gnana Sambadhar sung praising the glories of Lord Shiva, in this manner Poompavai - daughter of Sivasena Chettiar an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva, got back her life.
