Sri Garuda Panchami Vratam in the month of Shrvan treated as auspicious. Sri Garuda – The Celestial Vehicle - Nityasuri of Lord Vishnu. Worship of Sri Garuda and fasting on this day brings devoutness.
Sage Kashyapa had two wives Kadhru and Vinatha. Once they had a heated argument about the color of the tail of the horse Uchaisravas which was emerged out while churning the Milky Ocean. Kadhru proclaimed that the color of the tail of Uchaisravas is Black and Vinathai strongly opposed that the color of tail is white. In order to resolve the disagreement between them, Kadhru and Vinatha have decided that whoever fails in their statement would be the slave of the other. Kadhru had given birth to many serpents. She ordered one of her son to spiral the tail of Uchaisravas with his long body, so that it would give out an appearance of black. Thus, Kadhru won over Vinatha with her fake idea and made Vinatha as her slave. Vinatha continued to be a slave of Kadhru for several years and she had to undergo terrible living. Garuda – son of Vinatha happened to hear all the treacheries against his mother and decided to put an end to his mother’s slavery. Kadhru who was real cunning does not wish for any kind of freedom in Vinatha’s life. Garuda appeared before his step mother and asked a permanent solution to free her mother Vinatha. Kadhru demanded him to bring the divine nectar – Amrutham from the heavenly Abodes, which could help his mother free form the slavery. Garuda hurried to Indra Loka and fought with the deities and won over them. Next, he met the King of Lords – Indra. Before any misfortune happen, Garuda fallen on the feet of Lord Indra and explained his mother’s pathetic stories. Lord Indra felt empathy over Garuda and blessed him with the divine nectar.
