Sri Vagirajar was a fervent devotee of Lord Hayagreeva. It
is believed that the offerings he had made to Lord Hayagreeva were accepted by
Lord. He worshipped Lord with a vessel full of cooked pulse - seeds
of leguminous plant (it is a kind of pulse good for health with
lots of medicinal effect) and by keeping
the vessel holding behind his head. Every time, Lord
Hayagreeva appear before him and accept the offerings with the two
legs on his shoulder and eat the cooked pulses offered by him, almost the
same way the horses used to eat their food. In this way, he offers
the Prasadm to lord and the remaining keep for distribution. His
assistants were curious to know the reason for the decrease in the quantity
of Prasadam after offering to Lord. It made the assistants angry
and they wanted to know the reason. They abused Vagirajar with their
cheap comments. Vagirajar sincerely answered to their queries, but they
remained unconvinced.
One day, the assistants made a secret plan against Vagirajar.
The assistants kept the offerings to Lord mixed with venomous
poison, in case if it was consumed by Vagirajar it would definitely affect
him. As usual Vagiraja performed the offerings to Lord. When
the doors were opened, to everyone’s amazement there was nothing
remained on the vessel. Vagirajar sincerely answered to his
assistants that the Lord ate the whole Prasadam. The assistants
could not believe their eyes. They peeped into to Garbhagriha looked at
Lord Hayagreeva, the idol completely turned into bluish in color due to the
deadly poison. His assistants fell on the feet of Vagirajar and pleaded
with guilty. Vagirajar did not worry about the comments or praise of the
assistants, he worried about Lord Hayagreevar, he cried the whole
night, begged to forgive him for offering venomous poison and
restless. During the night Lord Hayagreeva appeared in his dream and
instructed Vagirajar to offer Him with a kind of Brinjal and its seeds to
remove the poison from the body. As instructed by the Lord,
Vagirajar applied the brinjal and its seeds continuously for 48 days and the
bluish color from idol got disappeared.
