Garudapuranam, Devipuranam and
Bramanda puranam describes the glories of Lord Hayagreeva – Horse faced Lord,
one of the incarnations of Lord Vishnu. Lord Hayagreeva is Guru of
Goddess Saraswathy. Lord Vishnu created Lord Brahma and
entrusted with the duty of creation. Lord Brahma underwent severe penance
for several years and Lord Vishnu blessed Him, provided him the custody of
sacred Veda as a referential subject for Creation. Lord Brahma started his
assigned work as Creator and created innumerable living beings. He
created demons as well as human beings and numerous creatures as well.
At this, the demons became jealous at
Lord Brahma. The demons wanted to take possession of the job
of Creation. The Demons Madhu and Kaidaba made a plan accordingly.
There was a demon named Hayagreeva who attained several boons from Lord Brahma,
after following severe austerities. The Demon Hayagreeva attained a particular
boon that, no human or animal could kill him. As planned by demon
Madhu and Kaidaba approached Hayagreeva and compelled him to steal the
custody of Vedas from Lord Brahma. As demanded by the Madhu
Kaitabha , He stolen the Veda and tied up the deities.
He transformed the abducted Veada into a female horse and safely kept in a cave
which was safeguarded by the demon Hayagreeva himself. Subsequently, the
demon Madhu and Kaidaba made a plan to kill Lord Brahma, therefore
they could obtain the permanent custody of Veda. All the deities
approached Lord Sriman Narayana and described the miserable situation. In
order to save Veda from the evil custody, Lord Narayan took the form of a
marvelous male horse and stood infront of the cave where it was
hidden.
