Vaikasi Visakham commemorates the birth of Lord Muruga in the month of Vaikasi (Tamil month) with the birth star Vishakam. ‘Valli Thirukalyanam’ is widely celebrated in the Temples dedicated to Lord Muruga especially at ‘Arupadi Veedu’ – The Six Abode of Lord Muruga know as Sri Bala Subramanya Swamy Temple in Thirichendur, Sri Dandayudapani Temple in Palani, Sri Subramanya Swamy Temple in Thiruttani, Sri Swamynatha Swamy Temple in Swami Malai, Sri Subramanya Swamy Temple in Thirupparam Kundram and Sri Subramanya Swamy Temple in Pazhamuthircholai.
Sri Valli Thirukalyanam, the celestial wedding of Lord Muruga with Sri Valli is celebrated on this day. There was a Tribal King Nambirajan who was an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva. He had no offspring’s so he prayed to Lord Shiva. With the blessings of Lord, Nambirajan found a baby girl amid the bamboo trees. Nambirajan named the baby girl Valli and brought up her like any other tribal girl in their community. Years passes by, Valli grew up into a beautiful young girl. Nambirajan entrusted her with the duty of taking care of their ranch. While Valli was engrossed in her duties, there she found a handsome young man Lord Muruga. Lord Muruga fell in love with Valli at first sight. Sri Valli was very adamant and does not want to fall for him or not willing to listen Him. He made several attempts to catch the attention of her and make her yearn for Him, unfortunately it did not work. Lord Muruga approached his brother Lord Ganesha seeking help. Lord Ganesha appeared before Sri Valli in the form of an untamed elephant and frightened her. At last, Sri Valli had to surrender to Lord Muruga for shelter. Consequently, Sri Valli married to Lord Muruga.
Skanda Puranam describes the purpose of Lord Muruga’s birth as to save the world from the harassment of demon Tharakasura. Eventually, a fierce battle took place between Lord Karthikeya with the demon Tharakasura. The demon Tharakasura underwent severe penance and pleased Lord Brahma thereby attained several boons. Immediately after obtaining extra ordinary powers, Tharakasura started to harass the deities and driven them out of the Heaven. Lord Indra approached Lord Brahma with the pathetic conditions of the deities. Lord Brahma initiates Lord Indra and the deities to approach Lord Shiva.
Lord Karthikeya led all the deities, Lord Indra, Lord Varuna, Lord Kubera, Lord Vayu etc.. as his warriors to fight against the demon Tharakasura. The demon Tharakasura also had huge number of mighty warriors to fight against Lord Karthikeya. Both the armies had chosen an island which was situated amid the sacred rivers Ganga and Yamua as their Warfield. Initially, the deities could not withstand the mighty force of the demons. Lord Indra was attacked by Tharakasura and severely wounded with the dangerous weapon named ‘Sakthi’. After seeing the continuous destruction caused on the deities’ army, King Muchukunda entered in to a vicious battle with Tharakasura. When King Muchukunda tried to attack Tharakasura with Brahmastra, Maharishi Narada intervened and informed him that only Lord Karthikeya could kill the demon Tharakasura. The ferocious battle continued, Veerabhadra tactfully attacked the warriors of demon and caused huge destruction to his opponents. Seeing the damages caused by Veerabhadra, the demon Tharakasura started using illusionary powers and attained ten thousand hands to fight against Lord Karthikeya. Tharakasura with his mighty force attacked the deities and made them ran away from the battlefield. Seeing the change of situation, Lord Vishnu instructed Lord Karthikeya to utilize the lethal weapon ‘Sakthi’. The battle continued, Tharakasura attacked with his mighty force and Lord Karthikeya lost his conscious for few seconds. Lord Karthikeya regained his consciousness and the vicious battle continued, Lord Karthikeya remembered the promising words of His parents and attacked the Demon Tharakasura with his mighty weapon ‘Sakthi’. Instantaneously, Tharakasura died and fell on the ground with a thud. The deities delighted at their success over the demon Tharakasura.
