Sri Budhha Purnima falls on the full moon day of fourth Lunar month Vaisakh, commemorates the birth of Lord Sri Budhha, one of the incarnations of Lord Vishnu.
This day commemorates three major events took place in Sri Budhha's life. They are:
- His birth in 623 BC.
- His enlightenment i.e. attainment of supreme wisdom, in 588 BC.
- His attainment of Nirvana i.e. the complete extinction of his self at the age of 80.
Budhha denotes 'The enlightened one', one of the incarnations of Lord Vishnu. Sri Budhha's life was in 5th century before the Christian era. His teachings were simple and were capable to liberate human beings from the misery and sufferings in life. Lord Buddha advocated the Eightfold Path consisting precepts like: Good conduct, right motive, accurate speech, precise and self-less effort, exact resolution, honest livelihood, firm attention and meditation to gain mastery over suffering. Sri Budhha prophesied this would leads to the state of 'Nirvana' - transcendental state of Liberation. He travelled extensively through the northern parts of India; He had many followers who were attracted at his simplicity of teachings.
Samath and Bodhgaya are the two important pilgrimage centers of Buddhists. Bodhgaya is one of the significant study centers of Budhhism. Mahabodhi Temple is one of the four holiest places and vibrant pilgrim center of Budhhists, it is located near where Sri Budhha attained Spiritual Enlightenment. The places associated with the life of Sri Budhha located inside the Bodhi Complex, Bodhi Tree and pond can be seen here. This temple was built by the Mayura Emperor Ashoka and many of his successors were made contributions to this temple, thus turned out as one of the famous pilgrim centers of Budhhisam followers.
