In chapter Twenty Seven of Devi
Puranam, Maharishi Veda Vyasa explains to King Janamejaya about the selection
of Virgins for the worship of 'Kanyaka Pooja'.
The virgins selected should be
from a good Brahmin family, graceful, healthy, beautiful and not
physically challenged. While performing Kanyaka pooja by a Brahmin, the
Kanyaka selected should always be from the Brahmin family
only. The Vaishyas and Kshatriya can worship Kanyakas from
any Brahmin, Kshatriya or Vaishya family. The worship of
Kshatriya Kanyaka provides courage and victory. The worship of
Vaishya Kanyaka provides prosperity. The performance of Kanyaka
Pooja on Ashtami Tithi or eigth day is treated as highly
auspicious. On this day, Goddess Bhadra Kali is worshipped by
performing sacrifical fire, offerings such as Kheer as 'Bhog', fruit and
flowers and the invited Brahmins should be served with meals and
alms. The fasting on the days of Sapthami, Ashtami, Navami thithis are
capable to bring abundance of merits.
As mentioned earlier, fasting on
these days and following strict austerity are part of the worship. The
performance of sacrificial fire, worship of Kanyakas, serving Brahmin with food
and alms are the perfect part of the successful completion of Navaratri
celebrations.
Maharishi Veda Vyasa continued,
with the perfect completion of the Navaratri Vrata a worshipper attains
prosperity, happiness, knowledge, virtuous offspring's, good
health, longevity and the eternal bliss. Those who did not follow
any righteousness and the austerities of Navaratri vrata would take birth
again and get strangled in this material world of agonies and pain.
The Mother of the Universe and who is the source of 'Energy' is worshipped by
all the deities, Sages, Lord Hari, Lord Hara, Lord Brahma, Lord Indra,
Lord Varuna, Lord Surya, Lord Agni, Lord Kubera constantly.
Maharishi Veda Vyasa
enlightens the King Janamejaya with the abundance of merit obtains
from the austerities on Navaratri. The
sins from killing a Brahmin (Brahma Hathya), consuming intoxicated
drinks, burglary, illicit relationship with women, association with evil
doers get relieved.
