Devi Puranam !! Significance of Navaratri !!

In chapter Twenty sixth  of Devi Puranam,  the King Janamejaya requests Maharishi Veda Vyasa to explain the significance of Navaratri  which falls in Autumn and Spring. 
 
 
 
The King inquire Maharishi Vyasa about the rituals and methods of  worship Goddesses during these days.  Maharishi explains to  the King that, the Autumn and Spring are the  tooth of Lord Yama. Worship Goddesses and observing austerity during these two Navaratris in Autumn and Spring releases from the clutches of Lord Yama.  In these two seasons, afflcting from major illness thereby the chances of losing lives are high.  Worshipping Chandika Devi during these days of Navaratri in the month of Chaitra and Ashwin is treated as auspicious.
 
 
 
As a part of the  austerity, performance of fire sacrifices are made by the Brahmins who are well versed with the Vedas  and highly skilled scholars who are engaged in the worship of Devi.  The worshipper  follows austerity by abstaining from all pleasures, observing fast, praising and chanting the glory of Goddesses, worshipping virgin girls (Kanyaka Pooja -  The children under one year  are not included (as they are not capable to taste or smell the offerings), the chosen girls of Two year treated as Kumari, Three year old  as Trimurti, Four year old as  as Kalyani, Five year old as  Rohini, Six year old as Kalika, Seven year old  as Chandika, Eight year old  as Sambavi, Nine year old as Durga and Ten year old girl treated as Subhadra.)
 
 
 
The worship of Virgins from different age groups and  in different forms provides abundant virtues.  The worship of Kumari (2 year old girl) brings prosperity, courage, win over enemies and longevity.  The  Trimurti worship (3 year old girl) yields prosperity, righteous life, fulfillment of desires, longevity with good offspring's.   The Kalyani  (4  year old girl) worship brings success in all endeavor,  knowledge, happiness and fulfillment of desires.  The worship of Rohini (5 year old girl) brings good health and cure from all the illness .  The worship of Kalika (6 year old girl)  brings win over enemies.    The worship of Chandika  (7 year old girl) brings prosperity.  The worship of Sambhavi (8 year old girl)  brings overpowering one's enemies, prosperity and success in all endeavors.  The worship of Durga  (9 year old girl) brings happiness and win over enemies.  The worship of Subhadra ( 10 year old girl) brings fulfillment of all the desires.
