The New Moon Day or Amavasya creates special upsurge of energies in human body. Severe austerities on the days of Amavasya and Pournami (Full moon) are treated as auspicious. The New Moon Day considered as capable to bring abundance of merits for men by following austerities and by paying homage to departed souls (Pitru Tharpanam), similarly austerities on the Pournami day also brings abundance of merits to women. Amavasya which falls in the month of September/October known as Pitru Paksha/Mahalaya Paksha, treated as the most auspicious period to offer reverence to the departed souls.
Amavasya is the day to remember forefathers. It is believed that the departed souls stay close to their beloveds during the day of Amavasya from dawn to dusk.
