Mahakaleshwar is one of the Dwadasha Jyotir Linga Kshetra/ Twelve Jyothirlingas situated on the banks of river Shipra in the city of Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh.   Lord Shiva worshipped in the form of a self-manifested Linga appears in the form of Lord Dakshina Murthy facing south.  In this temple Lord Mahakaleshwar is worshipped in Tantric form and smearing hot ashes on the Linga are one of significant methods of worship here.  The main sources of ashes for the sacred bath of Lord are abundant in supply from the Ghat (cremation ground) which is located very close to this temple.

There are shrines for Lord Ganesha, Goddess Parvathi and Lord Karthikeya in this temple.  There is a separate shrine for 'Serpent God' Nagadevathas, worship here takes place elaborately on the day of Nagapanchami.

The legend has that there was a king Chandrasena who was ruled the city of Ujjain.  He was an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva.  Seeing the thoughtful devotion of the King Chandrasena a five year old boy Shrikar was highly impressed and started to worship Lord Shiva in the same manner as the King Chandrasena does.  He took a stone and imagined it as a Linga and carried out his worship.  At first, everyone startled and made fun of him, later they did not pay any attention to him thinking as its child’s play.  But Shrikar did not pay any heed to their remarks instead he continued his worship conscientiously.  The most compassionate Lord was pleased at the self-less devotion and faith of the Shrikar. And Lord Shiva himself manifested in the form of Linga – Mahakaleshwar for the worship of the child.
