Thirukoorumankudi is one of the 275 Thevara Shivasthalam of Lord Shiva located in Nagapattinam District, Tamil Nadu.  In this temple Lord Shiva worshipped in the form of a self-manifested Linga.

The legend has that Lord Indra had a yearning to be with Ahalya, chaste wife of Sage Gauthama.  He assumed the form of Sage and approached Ahalya, the pair had a blissful time together.  Sage Gauthama realized the sinful deed of Lord Indra and cursed him.  Due to the curse Lord Indra had numerous female reproductive organs on his body.   Further, Sage Gautama cursed Ahalya to turn out to be stone.  Ahalya realized her mistake and begged for forgiveness.    Sage Gautama instructed that she will regain her form immediately after the touch of Lotus feet of Lord Rama.  Lord Indra felt shameful and approached Lord Brahma to get rid of the curse.  Lord Brahma advised Lord Indra to visit Thirukoorumankudi and worship Lord Shiva.  Lord Indra arrived on this sacred land, had a holy dip in Indra Theertham and worshipped Lord Shiva.  Instantaneously, the awful mark on his body changed into numerous eyes and got rid of the curse.   Hence, the presiding deity has got his name ‘Kannayiranathar/Kannayiramudayar’.
 
 
This temple remains open from 6.00AM to 1.00PM in the morning and 3.00PM to 7.00PM in the evenings.

This catastrophic incident brought trepidation amongst the deities. Inconsolable Lord Shiva carried the lifeless body of Goddess Sri Sati and wandered on the Earth for several years. The functions of Trinities to protect the Universe were shattered. All the deities were frightened about the terrible consequences and appealed to Lord Vishnu. Lord Vishnu’ dice chopped off the lifeless body of Goddess Sri Sati into several parts to diffuse the grief of Lord Shiva and each part fell into the different parts of the Earth. The places where the body parts of Goddess Sri Sati fallen on the Earth were turned into‘Shakthi Sthal/Shakthi Peedam’. Goddess Sri Biraja Devi Mandir is the place where Goddess Sri Sati’s navel fallen on the Earth.

Another legend has that the demon Andhakasura harassed the three worlds with his extra-ordinary powers. All the deities and Sages appealed to Lord Shiva.   Lord Shiva had a fierce battle with the demon Andhakasura.  During the battle, Lord Shiva pierced the chest of Andhakasura with his trident.   The blood oozed from his chest set out numerous demons and fought against the Lord.  This ferocious battle continued for several years, Goddess Sri Adi Shakthi transformed into Sri Mahakali and she gobbled up those blood and numerous bodies of Andhakasura.  At last Lord Shiva lifted the body of Andhakasura with his Trident and burnt with his third eye.  The demon Andhakasura realized his mistake and begged for forgiveness.  The compassionate Lord blessed him and transformed him into Bringhi, who turned out staunch devotee of Lord Shiva.
