The
legend has that Lord Indra had a yearning to be with Ahalya, chaste wife of
Sage Gauthama. He assumed the form of
Sage and approached Ahalya, the pair had a blissful time together. Sage Gauthama realized the sinful deed of
Lord Indra and cursed him. Due to the
curse Lord Indra had numerous female reproductive organs on his body. Further, Sage Gautama cursed Ahalya to turn
out to be stone. Ahalya realized her
mistake and begged for forgiveness. Sage Gautama instructed that she will regain
her form immediately after the touch of Lotus feet of Lord Rama. Lord Indra felt shameful and approached Lord
Brahma to get rid of the curse. Lord
Brahma advised Lord Indra to visit Thirukoorumankudi and worship Lord
Shiva. Lord Indra arrived on this sacred
land, had a holy dip in Indra Theertham and worshipped Lord Shiva. Instantaneously, the awful mark on his body changed
into numerous eyes and got rid of the curse.
Hence, the presiding deity has
got his name ‘Kannayiranathar/Kannayiramudayar’.

temple remains open from 6.00AM to 1.00PM in the morning and 3.00PM to 7.00PM
