According to hindu scriptures Sri Durga depicted as fierce form of Adi Sakthi, a powerful goddess riding on a roaring lion,   carrying ten malicious weapons in each hands. Sri Durga is the Supreme Goddess and mother of Lord Ganesha and Lord Karthikeya.  Goddess Sri Parvati transformed herself into a fierce form to behead the demon Mahishasura on this day.  Hence Durga Ashtami/Navami commemorates the victory of Goddess Durga over the demon Mahishasura.

51 Sakthi Sthalam / Sakthi Peedam !!

Jai Sriman Narayana !!
Jai Ambey Ma !!

The name 'Sakthi Sthalam - Sakthi Peedam' reveals the significance of Goddes Sakthi worship. Sri Durga, consort of Lord Shiva is the fierce form of Mother of the Universe, seated on a roaring Lion, with ten hands holding dreadful weapons on each of them. Sri Aayi Mahalakshmi - Goddes of Wealth and consort of Lord Vishnu and  Sri Saraswathy – Goddess of Wisdom and Knowledge, consort of Lord Brahma are the other forms of Mother Universe.   Sakthi worshipped in any of these form of Sri Kamakshi - The Mother of the Universe, Sri Parvathy/Uma - The gentle consort of Lord Shiva, Sri Meenakshi - The Majestic Queen of Lord Shiva, Sri Kali - The fierce form of Mother Universe and the most kind and superior form - The Mother of Lord Ganesha and Lord Skanda.

Sakthi Sthals are the sacred places where Lord Shiva's consort Goddess Sati's body part fallen while performing the Rudra's Thandavam by Lord Shiva. There are 51 sacred places are considered as the places where Goddess Sati's body parts fallen on the Earth, each one of these places are known as 'Sakthi Sthalam'.  Sakthi peedams are 18 in numbers.

Srimad Bhagavathapuram describes the Dhaksha Prajapati’s Yagna and the related incidents. Dhaksha Prajapati conducted a Yagna in a grand manner and invited all the deities, Rishis and Sages.  He did not invite Lord Shiva and his consort Goddess Sati for this grand occasion.  Though it was a great insult to Goddess Sati, Her urge to be with her family and make peace to her father and husband's rivalry on this occasion made her move out of Mount Kailash. But things were overturned when she arrived at the arena of Yagna.  She was mercilessly insulted by her father Daksha Prajapati, with utter shame and guilt she gave up her life jumping into the sacrificial fire.

Lord Shiva, the knower of All, with an excruciating pain of separation from Goddess Sati, he performed cosmic dance - Rudra Thandavam carrying the lifeless body of Goddess Sati on His shoulder. The three worlds, Brahma Loka, Rudra Loka and Sri Vaikundham lost its solitude. At last, with an intention to put an end to Lord Rudras agonizing performance, Lord Mahavishnu used His dice which chopped the lifeless body of Goddess Sati and the body part fell on the Earth in different places.   These places were considered as the 'Sakthi Peedas or Sakthi Sthalam'.

There is an interesting story about the Rivery Cauvery and why Lord Ranganatha preferred to be on the riverside of Cauvery.  The four holy rivers Ganga, Yamuna, Saraswathy and Cauvery got in to a heated argument about who was superior and closer to Lord Sriman Narayana.  The argument continued for some time, Yamuna and Sarawathy withdrawn from the dispute.  But Ganga and Cauvery continued their disagreement for long time.  They both decided to resolve the issue and get the justification from Lord Narayana.  Ganga replied to Narayana that she was the superior among the rivers because her origin reveals to a great extent that she was closer to Lord Narayan.  She was originated from the Feet of Lord Sriman Narayana.  Sriman Narayana had to agree to the fact.  In order to save Cauvery from her disappointment Lord Narayana promised her that a day will be there soon in the history to recognize her importance too.  As promised to river Cauvery Lord Ranganatha occupied His place close to river Cauvery.
