Sri Brahmapureeswarar
Temple is one of the 275 Thevara Shivasthalam of Lord Shiva located in Shirkazhi, which is 17kms away from
Chidambaram, Tamil Nadu. This is one of
the oldest temples built during the regime of Chola dynasty. The Emperor Vira Rajendrachola and the Kings
of Vijayanagara also have made abundance of contribution to this temple. This temple occupies vast acres of land and it has majestic Rajagopuram, grand mandapam and wide
circumambulatory paths. This temple
enshrines Lord Brahmapureeswar worshipped by Lord Brahma, Sri Thoniappar and Sri
Sattainathar within the precincts.

Mangalasasanam – Thiru
Gnana Sambandhar, Sundarar, Appar. Saint Arunagirinathar also sung praising Lord Subramanya in this temple. Nambi Andar Adigal,
Pattinathar and Manikkavasagar also sung praising the glories of this temple in
their famous compositions. In addition to the above, Shirkazhi Arunachala
Kaviyar also sung praising the grandeur of Shirkazhi
Temple.

Lord Brahma worshipped
Lord Shiva in this sacred land and started creation of living beings on Earth
after deluge. Hence the presiding deity
has got his name ‘Brahmapureeswarar’.
Significance – In this
temple Goddess Sri Thirunilai Nayaki blessed three year old Thiru Gana
Sambandhar with her milk of wisdom.
Instantaneously, the divine child started to sing praising the glories of
Lord Shiva and became one of the prominent Shivaite Saints known to the
world.

The legend has that
during the time of deluge the whole universe was about to submerge into water,
Lord Shiva meticulously carried the sacred 64 art forms in a boat and arrived on this sacred land. As a result these 64 art forms remained
intact throughout the deluge without any
damage.
This temple
remains open from 6.00AM to 12.00PM in the morning and 4.00PM to 9.00PM in the
evenings.
