The legend of Ajamila/Ajamilopakhyanam – Srimad Bhagavatham/Srimad Narayaneeyam !! Lyrics & Its meaning

Jai Sriman Narayana !!

Oh! Supreme Lord Guruvayurappa ! Long ago, there was a virtuous Brahmin named Ajamila, he was the head of the family send to woodland by his father to collect materials for fire sacrifice.  In the woodland Ajamila met an immoral women who offered intoxicated drinks to him.

Oh! Supreme Lord Guruvayurappa, Though Ajamila was austere and has good self control, he was completely fell under the spell of her charm and eventually gave up all his duties and responsibilities, forgot his asceticism and took great pleasure in her company.  In the long run, he became old and was very much attached to his son Narayana.

Oh! Supreme Lord Guruvayurappa, ultimately at the time of death the three dreadful emissaries of Lord Yama have approached Ajamila.  He was horrified at the sight of envoys of Lord Yama and he cried out for his son by calling out his name ‘Narayana’ due to the result of his past devotion.

Oh! Supreme Lord Guruvayurappa, as soon as Ajamila uttered your glorious name, Alas! There appeared the emissaries of Lord Vishnu with four hands, attired in marvelous yellow garments and they were having magnificent appearances.

Oh! Supreme Lord Guruvayurappa,  Ajamila was fasten with the rope and dragging the emissaries of Lord Yama was intervened and ordered to stop by the emissaries of Lord Vishnu,  eventually all his sins were narrated by the emissaries of Lord Yama.

Oh! Supreme Lord Guruvayurappa, the emissaries of Lord Vishnu stated that though Ajamila had committed sins, he has been made atonement for the sins committed.  Thus, he did not deserve any punishment.  Oh! Emissaries of Lord Yama, you are learned celestial don’t aware of reparation?

Oh! Supreme Lord Guruvayurappa, the emissaries of Lord Vishnu commented that according to the Shruthi & Smrithi, an individual who undergo austerities would be relieved from sins but do not restrain from the sinful deeds, while the selfless service to Supreme Lord would eradicates the sin and the sinful acts as well.

Oh! Supreme Lord Guruvayurappa, Your emissaries were affirmed to the envoy of Lord Yama that Ajamila had uttered the auspicious name of Supreme Lord Narayana out of fear, in this way he had made atonement for the sins committed in innumerable lives.

Oh! Supreme Lord Guruvayurappa, your emissaries described that, whoever chants the glorious names of Supreme Lord Mukunda unknowingly; he would be relieved from all the sins committed just like fuel added to the fire and a medicine that cures the illness.

Oh! Supreme Lord Guruvayurappa, in this way group of emissaries of Lord Vishnu concluded their speech about the significance of the glorious names of Supreme Lord to the convoys of Lord Yama and they left the place, shortly your emissaries also disappeared from the sight.  Ajamila remembered your glories and venerated you and eventually attained your holy abode.

Oh! Supreme Lord Guruvayurappa, the emissaries of Lord Yama duly informed the incidents to Lord Yama, who was anxious after listening to the happenings, strictly instructed his convoys not to appear before the devotees of Supreme Lord Vishnu.  Oh! Supreme Lord Guruvayurappa, I earnestly pray to protect us.
