Akshaya is name of the Samvatsara/ year, ‘Akshaya’ indicates imperishable/prosper is a propitious day for fasting and worship of Lord Vishnu & Godess Sri Mahalakshmi.  There are several myths associated with this auspicious day, Lord Parasurama, the sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu took place on this promising day, Draupadi received the spectacular vessel Akshya Patra from Lord Krishna, Sudama, a childhood friend of Lord Krishna visited Dwaraka during his acute poverty and blessed with affluences.  In the great epic Mahabharath, Pandavas exiled from Indraprastha for fourteen years to live as forest dwellers and one year in disguise.  Yudhishtira and Draupadi was advised by Lord Krishna to serve the Sages and Rishis in the woodland, Arujun went for severe penance praying to Lord Shiva to obtain Pasupathasthra, Bhima went for penance praying Lord Hanuman to attain immense strength from his brother, Nakul & Sahadeva went for penance praying to Ashwini Devathas.  It was one of the occasion, Sage Durvassa arrived with his thousands of disciple to the hermitage of Yudhishtira were received with honor and requested to have meal.  The couple found there were no grains left to serve Sage Durvassa and his disciple, it was the time Lord Krishna arrived for help of Draupadi by providing Akshaya Patra/A spectacular vessel never fails to produce food of any quantities.

Goddess Sri Mahalakshmi attained highest of honor, a dwelling place on the chest of Lord Vishnu on this promising day.  Lord Vishnu’s incarnation as Lord Parasurama, Lord Balarama was embodied on this day.  Lord Shiva received abundance of food as alms on his vessel from Goddess Sri Annapoorni of Varanasi.  Draupadi was humiliated in the huge hall of Assembly of Hasthinapur, Dusshasana was removing her attires before the honorable members of the Assembly, Pandavas and royal families; Draupadi cried her heart out for help remembering Lord Krishna.  Instantly, Lord Krishna provided her help uttering ‘Askhaya’, her attires grown endlessly which made Dusshasana failed in his attempt and fallen exhausted thus Draupadi was saved from the embarrassment before the Assembly.
