of Dithi, one of the daughters of Daksha Prajapathi.
Birth of Dusshala !!
Rishi Vaishampayana
narrates the birth of hundred sons of Drutharashtra & Gandhari, and the
birth of Yuyutsu from a Vaishya woman. King
Janamejaya, after listening to the birth of Kauravas earnestly requested Rishi
Vaishampayana to describe the birth of a daughter to Drutharashtra and Gandhari. King Janamejaya was aware of the boon
attained by Gandhari for hundred sons from Maharishi Veda Vyasa, he was desired
to know how Drutharashtra and Gandhari had a daughter?
Maharsihi Veda Vyasa
sprinkled water on the top of the mass of flesh delivered by Gandhari and cut
it into hundred equal pieces. Shevili
was dropping each piece into the mud pot contained ghee. In the meantime, Gandhari who has observed
severe austerities in her life dearly wished for the warmth of a daughter and
sincerely prayed for that. Gandhari was
definite that she will have hundred sons with the blessings of Maharishi Veda
Vyasa, she sincerely wished for youngest daughter to her hundred sons, the
thought itself brought immense pleasure in her.
Gandhari dreamed that the daughter born to them would bring bundle of joy
after her marriage, it will double the happiness of her husband, the presence
of hundred sons, and daughter and their children around her would be a blissful
life. Gandhari sincerely prayed to
herself that if she had undergone austerities with utmost faith and devotion, if
she had pleased her ancestors with the performance of homage, if she had
performed fire sacrifices with utmost faith and devotion and if she has respect
and affection to the elders in the family, they will provide her a daughter as blessing.
Maharishi Veda Vyasa completed the task
of cutting the mass of flesh into hundred pieces, informed Gandhari about the boon
given to her was not gone waste, a piece of flesh as surplus would fulfill her
desire for a daughter and this daughter would bring her boundless joy in the
form of her son. This excess piece of
flesh was safely secured in a mud pot containing ghee with the marvelous herbs
for the growth of the child and the child born was Dusshala, the only daughter
of Drutharashtra & Gandhari.
