It is the last day of Mahalaya Pitru Paksha, also known as Sarva Pitru Moksha Amavasya/Mahalaya Amavasya.  Pitru Paksha is a 15 lunar day’s period begins on Pournami day in the month of Bhadrapad known as propitious days to offer homage to ancestors.  Pitru Paksha starts on the day of Purnima with the ritual of Purnima Shraddha and it continues for another 14 days like Dwithiya Shraddha, Trithiya Shraddha, Chathurthi Shraddha, Panchami Shraddha, Shashti Shraddha, Sapthami Shraddha, Ashtami Shraddha, Navami Shraddha, Dashami Shraddha, Ekadashi Shraddha, Dwadashi Shraddha, Trayodashi Shraddha, Chathurdashi Shraddha and ends with Amavasya Shraddha/Sarva Pitru Amavasya.  It is believed that the performance of homage to the ancestors on the day of Amavasya would appease the deceased souls and it provide abundance of devoutness to the worshipper.
