Thiruthecchangur is one of the 275 Thevara Shivasthalam of Lord Shiva located in Thiruthuraipoondi, Thiruvanur District, Tamil Nadu.  This is one of the oldest temples of Lord Shiva built during the 12th -13th century by the Kings of Chozha and Pandya dynasties.  The temple inscriptions reveal the contribution made by King Rajaraja Chozha, King Kulothunga Chozha, King Rajendra Chozha, King Maravarma Pandya,
 
Presiding deity – Thiru Vellimalainathar/Rajathagiriswarar/Velliankundramarnthanathar with his consort Goddess Sri Bruhathnayaki/Periyanayaki
 
Mangalasasanam – Thiru Gnana Sambandhar
 
Sthalavruksham – Coconut tree/ Vilvam
 
Theertham – Shivagangai Theertham
 
Worshipped by – Goddess Sri Mahalakshmi, Navagrahas, Goddess Ganga
 
River Ganga became impure with the sins washed off by the devotees of Lord Shiva.  She too holy dip in many sacred Theerthas on Earth to get rid of the accumulated sins, but the impurity continued to be the same.  At last, she arrived on this sacred land and created a pond Shivagangai Theertham, Ganga continued severe austerities and worshipped Lord with the lotus flowers for 48 days.  Lord was pleased at the devotion of River Ganga and blessed her to remain untainted.

The legend has that the whole universe was swamped with deluge,  Goddess Sri Parvati earnestly prayed to Lord Shiva to protect this sacred land on Earth from the annihilation as it was the place packed with the  devotees of Lord and one of the  favorite places of Goddess Sri Parvati.   Lord Shiva was pleased at the request of Goddess Sri Parvati and sheltered this particular land from further destruction.
 
 
This temple remains open from 7.00 AM to 11.00 AM in the morning and 5.00 PM to 7.00 PM in the evenings.
