In Dwaparayuga there was a demon Vruthasura harassed the life of deities and Rishis.  All the deities approached Lord Shiva seeking for help.   Lord Shiva malformed the deities and Rishis into honey bees, therefore the demon Vrutharasura’s search for the deities to cause troubles turned out unsuccessful.   Hence, all the deities in the form of bees worshipped the Linga positioned here and sincerely followed the instructions of Lord Shiva.

The legend has that Lord Adishesha and Lord Vayu had a heated argument about their superiority. Lord Indra intervened and proclaimed them to prove their strength. The final verdict was followed, Lord Adishesha should carry the Mount Meru with his thousand heads and Lord Vayu should tear apart the Mount Meru with his strength.   Lord Adishesha stiffened the mount with its thousand hoods; as a result all the deities were perturbed.  Therefore, Adishesha loosened his grasp on the mountain, instantly Lord Vayu with all his strength blew off Mount Meru, consequently it divided into a few branches and a small part of it fallen on this sacred land on Earth.
