Life of Thiru Somasi Nayanar :

Thiru Somasi Nayanar was a zealous devotee of Lord Shiva.  He wanted to please Lord by performing Soma Yagam, in addition to this he had a wish that Lord Shiva should appear before him to accept the Avirbhaga of the Yagam.  He desired for the friendship of Thiru Sundaramurthi Nayanar, who has the authority to have the dharshan of Lord at his will.  Sundarar was very fond of Spinach; Somasi Nayanar made a practice of delivering the same to his home on daily basis.  Sundarar was so pleased to have Spinach in his every meal; he was unaware of the source of it, but his wife Sangili Nacchiyar was known about the provider.  Sundarar decided to meet Somasi Nayanar in person and arrived on this sacred land.  During their conversation Somasi Nayanar who was much awaited for an opportunity to reveal his earnest desire to conduct Soma Yaga to please the Lord.  Sundarar was agreed to fulfill the longing of Somasi Nayanar and prayed to Lord.  In the Tamil month of Vaikasi – Ayilyam Thiru Somasi Nayanar conducted Soma Yaga with all the Vedic Scholars and intellectuals under the supervision of Thiru Sundaramurthi Nayanar.  In the meantime, there appeared an outcaste person with his wife and two children.  Thiru Somasinayar who was passionately waiting for the presence of Lord, was terribly disappointed to see the outcast member and his family in the Yaga arena.  Instantly, Lord Ganesha revealed his presence, in a little while Lord Subramanya Lord Shiva & Goddess Sri Parvati also presented before them in their original form and received the Avirbhaga.

Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu had an argument about their supremacy.   Lord Shiva appeared in the form of a huge Linga to resolve the issue between the two deities.  Lord Brahma took the form of a swan and dived into sky and Lord Vishnu turned out a wild boar and plunged into the Earth with an intention to find the beginning and the end of huge Linga.  Shortly, Lord Brahma returned with a wrong witness Ketaki  ( screwpine) flower and Lord Vishnu came out with his sincere remarks.  Lord Shiva cursed the Ketaki flower and lost its presence in all the rituals forever.  Later, the most compassionate Lord blessed Ketaki flower that her presence would be permissible only on the day of Mahashivratri rituals.   Lord Shiva appeared in the form of an enormous blaze on the top of the hill and provided darshan, Lord Brahma was cursed to remain Swan.     In order to get rid of the curse Lord Brahma created a pond, underwent severe austerities and worshipped Lord Shiva.   Lord was pleased at the devotion of Lord Brahma.  Thus Lord Brahma regained his original form and recommenced the function of Creation.
