The legend has that Daksha Prajapathi conducted a Yagna, invited all the Deities Rishis and Sages except Lord Shiva with a very intention to humiliate him.  The deities’ and Rishis present at the Yagna were cursed by Lord Shiva.  Lord Agni lost its purity as a result the performance of fire sacrifices has reduced to nothing.   Eventually, the availability of torrential rains and the    growth of necessities of life on Earth were turned out unfavorable.  Lord Agni visited many sacred temples of Lord Shiva to get rid from the curse.   Finally, Lord Agni arrived on this sacred land, created a pond Agni Theertham and sanctified a Linga/ Agni Linga, continued severe austerities for several years and got relieved from the curse.

This temple remains open from 6.30 AM to 11.00PM in the morning and 5.00PM to 7.30PM in the evenings.
