Kovil / Manyu Kshetram Sri Veeranarayana Perumal Temple is one of the Abhimana
Kshetram of Lord Vishnu located in Chidambaram, Cuddalore District, Tamil Nadu.

Sage
Manavala Mamunigal was profound in Veda Sastra from the early ages of
childhood. He was devoted his entire
life in performing daily rituals to Lord Veeranarayana Perumal in this temple.
Once, while carrying out the daily rituals the Sage happened to hear the voices
of group of devotees assembled chanting the glorious verses ending with
Aravamuthey. Sri Manavala Mamunigal was ecstatic, a strong desire developed in
him to recover this splendid composition; his longing to get hold of the entire
composition brought him to Kumbakonam. Consequently, Lord Aravamuthan was directed
the sage to Thirukkurugur where he was obtained the entire compositions from
Thiru Nammalvar. Shortly, Thiru Manavala Mamunigal returned to
Kattu Mannar Kovil and publicized the 4000 Divya Prabandham available for the
public.

The
legend has that Lord Brahma was cursed Sage Mathanga for wrong recital of the
sacred Veda. In order to get rid of the
curse, Sage Mathanga visited Sri Mushnam and could listen to a divine voice direct
him to visit Manyu Kshetram/Kattu Mannar Kovil.
Sage Mathanga arrived on this sacred land and continued
austerities. Lord Vishnu was pleased at
the devotion of Sage Mathanga and appeared before him. Sage earnestly requested Lord to remain on
this sacred land forever. Hence, Lord
Veera Narayana decided to reside here with his consort Goddess Sri
Maragathavalli Thayar.
This
temple remains open from 7.30 AM to 12.30 AM in the morning and 4.30 PM to 8.30
PM in the evenings.
