The legend has that Rig, Yajur, Sama, Atharvana Vedas took the form of a human and worshipped Lord on this sacred land called Naluvedapathi, with their divine powers realized the influx of Kali Yuga and its evil effects.  Immediately they closed the temple doors permanently and left the place.  Later, Thirunavukkarasar and Thiru Gnana Sambandar arrived at this place and realized that the temple doors were closed by Vedas forever.  They saw the people of this village were passing through a tiny door available to get inside the temple premise.  Appar passionately sung praising the glories of Lord Vedaranyeswarar and the temple doors were opened and they worshipped Lord at their hearts content.  Thiru Gnana Sambandhar sung ‘Kolarupathikam’ praising the glories of Lord and the doors were closed once again.

During the periods of the evil influence of Jainism in Madurai, Thiru Gnana Samabandhar received an invite from queen Mangayarkkarasi of Pandya Kingdom.  Before leaving to Madurai, Sambandhar visited Thirumaraikkadu and discussed with Appar about the disastrous happenings at Madurai and the request of Queen Mangayarkkarasi.  Appar kindly advised Sambandhar not to visit Madurai at this moment.  Thiru Gnana Sambandhar responded to Appar with these glorious verses of ‘Kolarupathikam’ at this temple.
