Thiru Pukazhthunai Nayanar was a temple priest in Cheruvilliputhur.  He was a staunch devotee of Lord Shiva.  He worshipped Lord with immense devotion and dedication.  He adorned the Lord with alluring fresh flowers and the sacred Vedic hymns.  He meticulously carried out the daily rituals of the temple as prescribed in the scriptures.

Once, the whole Cheruvilliputhur and the surrounding areas were affected by severe famine.  It doesn’t make any difference in the life of Thiru Pukazhthunaiyar.  He continued his duty flawlessly.  Thiru Pukazhthunaiyar had no means to have necessities of life.   The villagers started to abandon their homes in search of livelihood.  Thiru Pukazhthunaiyar had no heart to leave the deity and worship.  He dearly loved the daily rituals performed to the Supreme Lord.   Even during the difficult times, he went in search of alluring fresh flowers for Lord and performed sacred bath to Linga.   He starved for several days without any means; nevertheless he flawlessly performed his duties with the failing health.   One day while performing the sacred bath to Lord with uttering the sacred Vedic hymns, he wobbled and fallen unconscious due to weariness.  The most compassionate Lord appeared before him and instructed Thiru Pukazhthunaiyar that he will find a coin in the sanctum of the temple on daily basis that could be utilized to appease his hunger.  In this way, Thiru Pukazhthunaiyar surpassed the severe famine with the grace of Lord.     Thiru Pukazhthunaiyar’s profound love and devotion to Lord provided him eternal bliss. He continued his self-less service to Lord for several years and attained salvation.

In the Tamil month Avani – Ayilyam is widely celebrated as Guru Puja day of Thiru Pukazhthunai Nayanar, the day he attained the Abode of Lord Shiva.
