The legend has that Sage Mrigandu had no progeny for quite some time.  He   underwent severe austerities praying to Lord Shiva for a child boon.   Lord was pleased at the devotion of Sage Mrigandu and appeared before him to offer boon.    Lord Shiva put forward two choices before the Sage and he has to select one from them.  The first choice was 100 children with no intelligence or wisdom and long life, the second choice was one child of short life span of 16 years with devotion, utmost wisdom and knowledge.  Sage Mrigandu opted for the second choice and the couple has got studious Markandeya as their child.    Sage Mringandu advised Markandeya to worship Lord Shiva to protect from the clutches of Lord Yama.  Markandeya visited many sacred shrines of Lord Shiva and finally arrived at this sacred land.  He underwent severe austerities and worshipped Lord.  Lord was pleased at the devotion of Markandeya and blessed with immortality.

Whoever worships Lord Ujjeevaneswarar with his consort Goddess Sri Balambika would be blessed with long life, intelligence and prosperity.
