There are interesting myths associated with this temple. There was a huge difference of opinion between Lord Adishesha and Lord Vayu about their supremacy.  Adidesha tightened the Mount Himalaya with his immense force; Lord Vayu puffed off the Mountain with its colossal air.   During their vicious fight the Mount Himalaya crumbled into three and transformed as Rock fort Temple at Thiruchirapalli, Srikalahasthi in Andhra Pradesh and Trincomalee in Sri Lanka.

Thiruchirappalli was under the regime of Chola Dynasty.  The King who was ruled Worayur as its capital was a passionate devotee of Lord Shiva.  A Shivaite Saint constructed a garden of Chevvanthi flowers in abundance for the worship of Lord. Suddenly, the flowers from the garden were started missing on regular basis and delivered it to the palace.   Because of this, the saint left with no flowers to carry out his daily worship.  The King who was also very fond of Chevvanthi flowers unnoticed the source of it.   Sage was disappointed at this and appealed to the King, but it was ignored.   Sage prayed to Lord Shinva, instantaneously a sand storm triggered caused the King’s assembly in chaos.   Shortly, the King realized his folly and prayed to Lord Thayumanavar for forgiveness.

Another legend has that Ratnavathi was a passionate devotee of Lord Shiva.  She was expecting her mother to be with her during the time of child’s birth.  Unfortunately, the river Cauvery was over flooded and made it impossible for her mother to be home right in time.  Ratnavathi became helpless with no one around during labor pain.  She earnestly prayed to Lord.  The most compassionate Lord disguised as her mother and assisted Ratnavathi throughout her labor.  Thus, the presiding deity has got his name Thayumanavar.

Worship of Lord Thayumanavar with his consort Goddess Sri Mattuvarkuzhali Ammai would provide uncomplicated child birth.

There are several interesting myths associated with this temple.  The wife of Chola King who was ruled Uraiyur as capital city was a passionate devotee of Lord Shiva. The queen Kanthimathi constantly visited the fort temple of Lord Thayumanavar at the hill top and resumed her worship.  She continued this practice although she was fully pregnant.   One day  she has started her expedition from Uraiyur to Thiruchirapalli on the scorching heat.   As soon as she reached this sacred land, she had fallen unconscious due to the unbearable heat.  After regaining consciousness, queen Kanthimathi was miserable at the thought of abandoning the daily worship of Lord.   The most compassionate Lord Shiva appeared as Thanthondreeswarar before the queen Kanthimathi and elevated her emotional state into supreme bliss.

Another legend has that the Chola King who was ruled this city was an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva.  The King carried out a supervision of the entire villages in Uraiyur with his men .  King majestically took his seat on the royal elephant and arrived at this place; suddenly the elephant lost its mental balance and ferociously wandered through this place causing all kinds threat.  Kings men were worked so  hard to calm down the elephant, but all their efforts became fruitless.  King was in dilemma, he earnestly prayed to Lord Panchavarneswarar.  Instantaneously, Lord’s fleeting looks fallen at a rooster grazing on the extreme end of this village.   At once, the rooster gained a massive strength of a demon and darted to the forehead of the elephant.  The rooster with all its strength pierced hardly on the forehead of the elephant and calmed down.  The elephant hurried to a bael tree with the unbearable pain and positioned calmly.  Soon, the rooster also joined with the elephant.  After witnessing this miraculous incident the King understood the divinity of this sacred place and decided to construct a magnificent temple for Lord Shiva.   Thus, this place has got its name Kozhiyur, afterwards changed into Uraiyur.

The idol of Goddess Sri Kanthimathi Ammai was worshipped by the Naga Kanyakas (Serpent Gods & Goddesses) and it was brought to Uraiyur by the Chola King.

This temple remains open from 6.00 AM to 12.00 PM in the morning and 4.00PM to 8.00PM in the evenings.

Vaikundha Chathurdashi commemorates Lord Vishnu’s worship of Lord Shiva.  The legend has that Lord Vishnu visited the most sacred land on the Earth Varnasi, had a desire to worship Lord Shiva with 1001 lotus flowers.   Lord Vishnu had ablutions in Manikarnika Theertham and initiated the worship.    Lord Shiva wanted to test the profundity of Lord Vishnu’s devotion and hid one of the flowers from the cluster.  Lord Vishnu realized the missing of one flower from the bunch and decided to resume the worship by offering one of his lotus eyes to Lord.   Lord Vishnu plucked one of his eyes and offered to Linga in place of lotus flower.  Lord Shiva was overwhelmed at the devotion and dedication of Lord Vishnu and appeared before him.  Further, Lord Shiva affirmed that Lord Vishnu as the supreme devotee of Lord Shiva and offered him the fierce weapon Sudharshana Chakra.
