The legend has that Sage Jamadgni and his chaste wife Renuka Devi had hundred and one sons.  Renuka Devi mold pot out of raw sands from the river banks with the power of her chastity and fetch water for the daily rituals.  Once, on her way for early morning ablutions a celestial Gandharva happened to cross her way.  Instantly, she lost her chastity and her daily practice of creating the pot out of raw sand turned out unsuccessful.  Sage Jamadagni visualized the whole scenario and fumingly ordered his 100 sons to take away the life of their depraved mother.  But, the hundred sons were refused to follow the orders of their father.  Sage Jamadagni remembered Parasurama and ordered him to cut off his mother’s head for the sin he had committed.   In a moment, Sage Jamadagni cursed his hundred sons who were not willing to follow his orders, due to the curse the hundred sons were turned into ashes.   As per the instruction of his father, Parasurama chopped off his mother’s head and brought to his father.  Sage Jamadagni was highly pleased at the act of Parasurama, he blessed Parasurama and offered him boons. Instead, Parasurama requested his father to give life to his mother and brothers.  Thus, Parasurama revived the life of his mother and brothers.  Later, Parasurama and Sage Jamadagni felt distraught at the sin they had committed, they arrived on this sacred land and worshipped Lord Shiva.

Another legend has that the Chola King who was ruled this city used to make regular visits to Chidambaram to worship Lord Nataraja.  Every day, he passes through this sacred land with his men carrying lantern.  Each time when they pass through this place, the lantern went off and regains its glow immediately after crossing this place. This incident stirred the curiosity amongst the King and his men resulted in rigorous search alternatively finding a Linga.  Shortly, Chola King built a temple on its place to worship.

This temple remains open from 6.00AM to 11.00PM in the morning 4.30PM to 7.30PM in the evenings.

Two days back we and our family went to the temple. Really it is a very ancient and old temple. we had a nice darshan and the old priest who is taking care of the temple explained about the history of the temple in a nice way.we felt very calm and pleasant in the temple. The old priest also explained that it is a parikara stalam for people who born in the birth star of ANUSHAM. But we think the public can take some steps to develop the temple because when u come around the temple we could find so many old broken statues and it is full of bushes. So people who visits temple in those areas please go to this temple and get the blessings of Lord Shiva.

yesterday i visited this temple for the second time.first visit was around five yrs back.there was no change in the status of the temple all these yrs.i was been told that this temple had kumbabishekam around 60 yrs back&some steps are been taken to undertake the same.

i feel the importance of this temple is to be brought out, to reach the public by proper display of the name board&its significance at the main road leading to mayiladuturai-vaitheeswaran koil, sothat many outsiders visiting other big temples in this area vl also visit here&might contribute for the betterment of this ancient, powerful temple.

finally, the archakar here is old person&very kind, but has to be proactive in channelising the devotees who are willing to donate articles, money so as to carryout day to day poojas in a good way leave alone the kumbabishekam
