Prahalada. Lord Sriman Narayana emerged out of the Ugra Sthambam/Stone
pillar in his fierce form as half man & half lion to kill the demon
Hiranyakashipu. The demon Hiranya Kashipu attained several boons to live
an immortal life and started harassing the life of deities and sages. He
had obtained quite intricate boons and they were his death would not be
possible by deities or human man, not with any of the weapons, not during the
day or night, and not on the Earth or Sky. All the deities appealed
to Lord Vishnu to save from the atrocities of the demon Hiranyakashipu.
In order to keep the boons provided unscathed, Lord Vishnu transformed into a
half-man half-lion form and appeared before Hiranyakashipu at the time of
sunset, Lord Narasimha took his body on his lap and seated at the raised
platform made of wood at the entrance of Hiranyakashipu’s palace and tore his
abdomen with his sharp pointed nails. In this way, Lord Narasimha
protected the boons provided to Hiranyakashipu.
