Thiru Kalikkamba
Nayanar was born in the family of merchants in Thiru Pennadagam, one of the
flourished lands in the Chola Kingdom. He
was an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva and led an ascetic life at a young
age. He selflessly served the devotees
of Lord Shiva with utmost reverence. His
chaste wife wholeheartedly accompanied him in serving the devotees of Lord.
Once, Kalikkamba
Nayanar and his wife received a group of devotee of Lord Shiva to their
home. The guests were received with
utmost reverence. Kalikkamba Nayanar
welcomed them with folded hands and nectar like speeches, he washed the feet of
the devotees standing in front of him and his devoted wife dutifully poured
water to his hands. Suddenly, she recognized
a devotee of Lord was a servant of Kalikkamba Nayanar earlier; she sincerely
wanted to avoid washing his feet by her husband, hence she refused to pour water. Kalikkamba Nayanar was shocked and least
expected this kind of behavior from his wife.
In a sudden rage he took a sharp knife and he cut off her hand into
two. And calmly continued to wash his feet
and served the devotees of Lord with sumptuous meal. Thiru Kalikkamba Nayanar and his virtuous
wife continued their devoted service to the devotees of Lord and finally attained
Salvation.
In the Tamil
month Thai – Revathi is widely celebrated as Guru Puja day, the day Thiru
Kalikkamba Nayanar attained the Abode of Lord Shiva.
