Thiruvennainallur is one of the 275 Thevara Shivasthalam of Lord Shiva located in Vizhippuram District, Tamil Nadu.  This prominent temple occupies huge acres of land with a majestic Rajagopuram and wide circumambulatory paths.  In this temple Lord Shiva worshipped in the form of a self-manifested Linga.





Presiding deity – Thiru Thaduth Atkonda Nathar/Venupureeswarar/Krupapureeswarar with his consort Goddess Sri Mangalambikai/Vetkanniammai





Mangalasasanam – Sundarar





In this temple Sundarar can be seen on his wedding attire.   On his wedding there was  a heated argument took place day between Sundarar and an old man.  In this incident, Lord appeared as an old man before him and produced all the documentary evidences which was signed by his forefathers to prove Sundarar as his attendant and settled the disputes.  Finally, the verdict was followed on the basis of tradition, documentary evidences and witnesses and Lord has won over Sundara.   At last, Lord took Sundara with him into the Sanctum Sanctorum of this temple and disappeared.     Sundarar passionately sung praising his glories, the kindhearted Lord initiated the beautiful verses ‘ Pitha Pirai soodi’  for his slave Sundara and it has become one of the famous compositions in Thirumurai.





In this temple Saint Arunagirinathar also has sung praising the glories of Lord Subramanya.

The legend has that while churning the milky ocean by the deities and demons there appeared acute venom that was gracefully swallowed by Lord Shiva.  Instantaneously, Goddess Parvati caught hold of Lord Shiva’s throat and the venom wedged on his throat forever.   In this manner, Goddess Parvati saved the entire Universe from any destruction.  In order to protect Lord Shiva from the ill effects of the venom Goddess Parvati arrived on this sacred land and built a hermitage of butter (Vennai in Tamil).   She created a ‘Panchagni’ in the middle of this hermitage made of butter and underwent severe penance praying to Lord.  Thus, this place has got its name ‘Thiruvennainallur’.




Worship of Lord Krupapureeswarar with his consort Goddess Mangalambikai along with Lord Ganesha provides mental peace, prosperity, Intelligence and wisdom.   It also removes delay in marriages and adverse effects of planets. 





This temple remains open from 6.00AM to 11.00PM in the morning and 5.00PM to 8.00PM in the evenings.
