The legend has that during the ferocious battle between the Pandavas and Kauravas at Dharmakshetram – Kurushektram, King Yudhishtira’s declaration about the death of the elephant Ashwathama resulted in the grief-stricken death of Dronacharya who mistook it was the death of his son Ashwathama.  King Yudhishtira was felt ashamed of his treacherous act and assumed himself responsible for the death of Dronacharya.  Yudhishtira arrived on this sacred land, took dip in the holy pond and underwent severe austerities praying to Lord Vishnu and finally got rid of the sin.

Another legend has that Padmasura attained several boons from Lord Shiva and started to harass sages and deities.  He obtained a peculiar boon that he would die only at the touch of his head by himself.  All the deities prayed to Lord Vishnu to put an end to the atrocities of Padmasura.  Lord Vishnu transformed into an attractive woman Mohini and appeared before the demon.  He was mesmerized at the beauty of Mohini and obediently followed her instructions.   Mohini ordered Padmasura should have a dip in the holy pond before getting any closer to her.  He went to have a dip in the pond and put a handful of oil on his head, as per the boon he turned into ashes instantly.

This temple remains open from 6.00AM to 11.00AM in the morning and 5.00PM to 7.30PM in the evenings.
