Thiruvidaimaruthur/Madhyarjuna Kshetram/Sembakaranya Kshetram/ Mukthipuram/ Sri Mahalingeshwarar Temple  is one of the 275 Thevara Shivasthalam of Lord Shiva located 9kms from Kumbakonam enroute to Thiruvidaimaruthur, Tamil Nadu .  This is one of the oldest temples known as Madhyarjuna/Panchalinga Sthalam/Shanmabakaranyam/Mukthipuram equivalent to Varanasi.   In this temple Lord Shiva worshipped in the form of a self-manifested Linga.



This is one of the oldest temples famous for its architectural and craftsmanship.   This temple occupies 20 acres of massive land and it has stunning Rajagopuram and 3 vast circumambulatory paths namely Ashwamedha Pradhakshina Praharam, Kailasa Praharam and Pranava Praharam, circumambulation of each path has its own significance and provides abundance of religious merits of Ashwamedha Yagna, visit to the Abode of Lord Shiva & Goddess Parvati at Mount Kailash and liberation from the cycles of Birth and & Death respectively.    This grand temple has the Parivara Devatha shrines within its vicinity.


 

Presiding deity – Sri Mahalingeshwarar with his consort Goddess Sri Brihad Sundara Kuchambal/Nanmulainayaki/Perum Mulainayaki (one of the Sakthi Peedas)


 

Mangalasasanam –Appar, Sundarar, Sambandhar and  Manikkavasagar sung praising the glories of Lord Mahalingeshwarar in this temple.  Saint Pattinathar and Karuvoor Thevar also sung praising the Lord in this temple.

The legend has King Varaguna Pandya’s horse trampled upon a Brahmin accidently while he was returning from woodlands after hunting expedition.   As a result he was afflicted with the Brahmahathi Dosha.  He prayed to Lord Somasundareswara and Goddess Meenakshi at Madurai to get relieved from the Brahmahathi sin.  Lord Somasundareswara appeared in his dream and instructed him to visit this sacred land to worship.  King Varaguna Pandya arrived in this temple through the eastern entrance to sanctum sanctorum and got himself out through the western gate at the divine guidance of Lord.  Consequently he was got relived from the Brahmahathya sin.


 

This temple remains open from 6.00AM to 12.00PM in the morning and 4.00PM to 9.00PM in the evenings.
