Sri Krishna Chaithanya Mahaprabhu/Sri Gauranga Mahaprabhu was born in Mayapur, Nadia on 4th February, 1486 A.D. He was born as tenth child to Pundit Jagannatha Misra and Sachi Devi. Sri Jagannath Misra was a pious brahimin and a Vedic scholar lived in the city of Navadwip (Nine islands) in Nadia District, West Bengal. Smt. Sachi Devi was the daughter of Nilamber Chakravarthy a renowned astrologer. Sachi Devi gave birth to a beautiful child in the night of lunar eclipse. Her father predicted that the child would become a famous persona and the whole world would praise the glories him. They named the child Vishwambhar.
Sri Jagannath Misra and his devoted wife Smt.Sachi Devi had ten children. The eight children were girls died immediately after birth. The ninth child was Vishwarup accepted monastery at the age of sixteen. The tenth child was Vishwambhar, his mother called him Nimai. He was popularly known as ‘Gauranga’ because of his fair complexion and charismatic looks. Gauranga was grown into an unusual and frivolous lad.
At the age of eight Gauranga was admitted into Tol of Gangadas Pandit situated in his village. Within two years of time he mastered Sanskrit language and Rhetoric. Further, Gauranga studied at the school of philosophy, he learned study of valid reasoning at the school of Vasudev Sarvabhauma. Gauranga’s extra-ordinary intelligence and grapsing power attracted Sri Raghunath, an author of famous book on logic called ‘Didheeti’. Raghunath was extremely ambitious and believed himself as a great scholar than anybodyelse. When Raghunath met young Gauranga at school, he found that the studious boy of fair complexion and charming nature won the hearts of people very easily with his extra ordinary intelligence. Those were the times Gauranga was engrossed in writing commentary on Nyaya, this made Raghunath made more anxious and started loosing hope within him. Once they were travelling on a boat, Raghunath reluctantly enquired Gauranga to read his commentary on Nyaya. Gauranga most willingly read out the commentary to Raghunath. After listening to Gauranga, he wept bitterly and realized that Gauranga’s writings were unique with all those scholarly skills. Raghunath’s long time wish to become a scholar shattered instantly. Gauranga enquired the reason for Raghunath’s grief. He sincerely answered his long cherished desire to be known as one of the prominent scholars in the school of Nyaya. After listening to Gauranga’s commentary on Nyaya, Raghunath’s hopes were blown apart. Gauranga was saddened at the though of he became the cause of Raghunath grief. He comforted Raghunath and tossed his manuscripts into the river calling them dry philosophies. Gauranga’s high-mindedness was incomparable. Later, Raghunath’s Didheeti won the superiority over Nyaya and Gauranga’s commentary on Nyaya lost to the world.
Gauranga had profound knowledge in Nyaya, Rhetoric, Smriti and Grammar by the age of ten. During this period of time, his elder brother Vishwarup accepted Sanyasashram. He comforted his parents saying that his brother set off to serve Lord and wanted constantly in his thoughts. Immediately after, Gauranga’s father passed away. Young Gauranga was the only solace and support to his widowed mother Sachi Devi.
