In this temple worship of Lord Shiva and daily rituals are performed to a

Chandikeshwara present unlike the other temples. This is the temple where
Saint Manikkavasagar received Pranavopadesham from Lord and attained
Samadhi.
The legened has that Saint Manikkavasagar (Thiruvadhavoorar)
who was a minister in the assembly of King Harimardhana Pandya. Manikkavasagar
arrived Thiruperunthurai as assigned by the King with sufficient gold coins to
buy horses from Arabs. He was fasicinated by the performance of Veda
Padasala situated nearby his place of stay. He was completely absorbed in
chanting of Vedic hymns by the disciples and the captivating appearance of Guru
as Lord himself. He absolutely forgot his mission and remained one
amongst them. He continued to learn the sacred Hymns of Lord with utmost
devotion and faith. Manikkavasagar realized the presence of Lord in his
Guru and built a temple to worship with the gold coins which were offered by
the King to buy Arabian horses. Later, King Harimardhana Pandyan provided
abundance of contributions to build the spectacular structure of this temple.

from the King. At last they found a surplus one and looked for the priest
to receive the honor from the huge crowd. An aged priest with saintly
