Thiruvalangadu Sri Vadaranyeshwarar temple is situated in a village called Thiruvalangadu on the western suburbs of Chennai, located on the Chennai – Arakonam route which is 5km away from Arakonam station. This is one of the oldest temples built during the 12th century by the Kings of Chola Dynasty. This temple is recognized as one of the Pancha Sabha (Famous Five Cosmic Dance Hall) of Lord Shiva also known as one of the 275 Thevara Sivasthalam. The five renowned Sabhas of Lord Shiva are:
Ratna Sabha (Thiruvalangadu)
Kanaka Sabha (Chidambaram)
Chitra Sabha (Thiru Kuttralam)
Tamra Sabha (Thirunelveli)
Rajatha Sabha (Madurai)
The Presiding deity – Lord Vadaranyeshwarar with his consort Goddess Vandarkuzhali
Sthala Vruksham – Jackfruit Tree
Theertham – Mukthi Theertham
Sannidhis – Lord Ganesha, Goddess Kali
Mukthisthalam/Prakthyasham to – Karaikkal Ammayar
Festivals –Shivaratri, Thiruvathirai/Aurudra Darisanam
This temple has associated with a few myths, Karikkal Ammayar – one of the famous Shivaite saints attained the Abode of Lord Shiva in this place. Karaikkal Ammayar with her hands and head on the ground preceded her journey from mount Kailash to Thiruvalangadu at the divine instruction of Lord. The most comppassionate Lord revealed his cosmic dance to Karaikkal Ammayar in this temple.
Another legend has that Lord Shiva while entranced in his cosmic dance, his anklets fell onto the Earth and scattered into five places turned out prominent Pancha Sabha of Lord. Thiruvalangadu – The temple of Lord Vadaranyeshwarar & Goddess Vandarkuzhali, Chidambaram – The temple of Lord Chidambarnathar & Goddess Shivakami, Madurai – The temple of Lord Sundareshwarar & Goddess Meenakshi, Thirukuttralam – The temple of Lord Kuttralanathar & Goddess Kuzhalvai Mozhiammai and Thirunelvei – The temple of Lord Nellaiappar & Goddess Nellaiammai are the most celebrated places as Pancha Sabha.
Another legend has that Lord Shiva and Goddess Uma had a serious debate about their proficiency in dancing abilities. The divine couple decided to prove it to the entire Universe, all the deities and rishis were assembled to witness their cosmic dance. Both of them were unconquerable, at a certain point Lord Shiva’s earring fell on the Earth. In order to pick the earring and at the same time without making any obstruction to their dance perforamance Lord Shiva raised his feet to a magnificent position. Thus, He proved his incomparability to His witnesses assembled. In this temple Goddess Vandarkuzhali can be seen on her dancing posture.
