Iyarpakai Nayanar – A rich landlord was lived in the city called Kaveri Poopattinam, he was an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva and he visualized Lord in all his devotees. He was leading a righteous life with his wife – a woman of virtues. He strongly believed in charity to the devotees of Lord Shiva is equivalent to service to Lord. Whoever approaches him with the name uttering Lord, he profusely offered them with their needs. Lord Shiva was pleased at the self-less devotion of Iyarpakai Nayanar and desired to reveal his prominence to the world.
Once a Brahmin approached Nayanar and he was highly overwhelmed at the sight of the pious Brahmin, smearing ashes all over the body, wearing rudraksha and uttering the name of Lord repeatedly. Nayanar welcomed the Brahmin with utmost reverence. The Brahmin started to speak about the kindheartedness and dutifulness of Nayanar towards his guests. He highly admired Nayanar for his dedication towards the devotees of Lord Shiva and satisfying their needs whoever pays visit to his home. The Brahmin earnestly revealed his desire to have a thing which Nayanar possessed. Nayanar most willingly agreed to provide the Brahmin whatever he asks for, at one condition that he should have the same to impart with him. The Brahmin revealed his desire to have Nayanar’s wife as a gift. Without any trace of sentiment, Nayanar agreed to give off his wife as a gift to the Brahmin. He did not worried about the faithfulness of the Brahmin and did not show any anxiety or awfulness in offering an unusual gift. Nayanar was truly believed that it is his responsibility to please the devotee of Lord and treat his guest with honor. Nayanar did not worried about the righteousness of the Brahmin or he was not quizzical about the whole scenario.
Nayanar informed his dutiful wife about the happening. She was alarmed but soon gained composure. She did not questioned her husband, she was amicably handled the situation. She had full faith on her husband, whatever he chooses to do would be always blameless. She decided to follow the verdict of her husband wholeheartedly. Nayanar approached the Brahmin and informed him about his decision to give away his wife. Brahmin asked Nayanar to accompany them to a certain point from where he could move on freely without facing any danger. Nayanar with grace accompanied them like a warrior clad in shield and sword on his hand to protect them from any peril.
Brahmin, Nayanar and his wife resumed their journey. On their way, they met with the enraged relatives who were abused Nayanar for his illicit act. They felt ashmed of the whole state of affairs and threatened Nayanar to keep away himself from the atrocious act. The threats were nothing but clouds for a moment to him, he unperturbedly continued his duty of protecting them. The Brahmin pretended to be sacred at the threat of his relatives. Nayanar’s wife consoled him that he is capable to fight against them. Nayanar could not tolerate the arrogant act of his relatives against the Brahmin - devotee of Lord. He fought with them and shoved off their heads. Nayanar felt relieved at the thought of he had saved the Brahmin with the Grace of Lord. They resumed their journey and arrived at the temple in Thiruchaikadu. The Brahmin ordered Nayanar to leave them. Before leaving, Nayanar prostrated Brahmin with utmost reverence and blissfully left the place.
Nayanar preceded his journey towards home, heard the voice of Brahmin calling him back. Nayanar turned his head looking for the Brahmin nervously at the thought of danger to the devotee of Lord and hurried back anxiously. But, he could not see the Brahmin anywhere, his wife was standing alone. Soon they could hear a voice and visualized Lord Shiva with Goddess Parvati blessing the couple with eternal Salvation. Whoever lost their lives while fighting with Nayanar on their journey also attained the Abode of Lord Shiva.
Tamil Month Markazhi – Uthiram is widely celebrated as Gurupuja Day in Thiruchaikadu to commemorates the above incident.
