Viranminda Nayanar was born in Thirchenkunrur/ Thiruchenkodu, one of the prominent places in the Kingdom of Chera.  He was born in a family of agriculturists and a fervent devotee of Lord Shiva; he visualized Lord in his devotees.  He travelled extensively through the lands with the firm mission of serving the devotees of Lord Shiva.  Finally, he arrived at Thiruvarur and continued his service to Lord and his devotees. He attracted the hearts of the people with his self-less devotion to Lord and his devotees.  There was a hall – Devachiriyam adjacent to the famous temple of Lord Tyagaraja in Thiruvarur, where lots of devotees assembles and share their divine thoughts and experiences about Lord.  Viranmindar made a regular practice to serve the intellectuals gathered and listen to their discussions carefully.

Sundaramurthy Nayanar was a great Shivaite poet and a passionate devotee of Lord Shiva.  Once, Sundarar hurriedly crossed the devotees gathered in the hall without paying attention and dashed to the sanctum sanctorum of the temple.  It stirred up the anger in Viranminda Nayanar, he criticized Sunadaramurthy Nayanar’s disrespectful act against the devotees assembled in the Devachiriyam Hall.  Viranminda Nayanar was sternly believed that serving devotees of Lord, pay due respect and honor to them is superior to serving the Lord.  Viranminda Nayanar angrily moved towards Sundaramurthy Nayanar and revealed his concerns in a few harsh words.  Sundaramurthy Nayanar realized the sin he had committed and prostrated before Viranminda Nayanar.  Sundarar out of sheer devotion and respect towards Viranminda Nayanar, sung praising his devotion to Lord. Viranminda Nayanar got enthused listening to the nectar like verses sung by Sundar and blessed him. It is believed that Lord Shiva himself conveyed the prime message through his devotee – Viranminda Nayanar to the public.  Later, Viranminda Nayanar attained the Abode of Lord Shiva with the devoutness he had acquired through his self – less service to the devotees of Lord.

In the Tamil month Chithirai – Thiruvathirai is celebrated as Guru Puja Day.  The day Thiru Viranminda Nayanar attained the abode of Lord Shiva.
