Nayanar/Nayanmars were Shivaite Tamil poets lived in Tamil Nadu during 5th and 10th century. They were fervent devotee of Lord Shiva sung praising the glories of Lord. The Periya Puranam and Thirumurai were written during the 13th century described the life history of 63 Nayanmars and 9 Thokai Adiyars. Appar, Sundarar, Thirugyana Sambadhar and Manicka Vachakar are collectively known as ‘Nalvar’. During the life time of the Nayanmars they have visited a number Temples of Lord Shiva (Shivasthalam) and sung praising the glories of Lord came to known as Padal Petra Shivasthalam.
