Sangameshwarar Temple, Bhavani – Erode

Jai Sriman Narayana !!

Jaya Jaya Sankara Hara Hara Sankara !!

Sangameshwarar Temple is located in Bhavani (Tirunana), which is 56kms away from Salem and 15 km from the District of Erode.  The presiding deity of this temple is Sanghameshwarar with His consort Vedha Nayaki.  This is one of the Thevara Padal Petra Idam, Thiru Gnana Sambar – one of 63 Nayanmars (saintly persons) sung praising the glory of Lord Shiva.

Sangameshwarar Temple is situated on a four acre land on the northern bank, at the convergent point of two rivers Bhavani and Cauvery also known as Dakshin Prayag.  Hence the presiding deity Lord Shiva came to known as Sangameshwarar; take a holy dip in Prayag purifies mind and body as well.  The Rajagopuram stands majestically with five tiers positioned on the north.  There are separate shrines for Lord Vinayaka, Lord Dakshinamurty, Goddess Durga, Lord Nataraja, Sri Adi Keshava Peruma with his Consort Soundaravalli Thayar, Lord Subramanya and Lord Natarajar.   On the south beautifully positioned 63 Nayanmars can be seen. The shrine of Sri Vedha Nayaki Thayar is facing east in this temple. Saint Arunagirinathar composed many songs praising the glory of Lord Subramanya in Thirunana.

One of the attractions of this temple is ‘Ivory Cradle’ presented by Mr. William Garrow – who was the Collector of Coimbatore and Salem during the East India Company regime.  He was an ardent devotee of Goddess Vedha Nayaki.  During those days, only Hindus were allowed to enter the Sanctum Sanctorum, Mr. William Garrow used to worship Goddess Vedha Nayaki through a small opening made on the wall.  One night Goddess Vedha Nayaki appeared on his dream and instructed to leave the bungalow immediately.  Mr. William Garrow followed the instruction of Goddess Vedha Nayaki at once, soon after the whole Bungalow collapsed.  As a mark of gratitude to Goddess who saved his life, Mr. William Garrow contributed an ‘Ivory Cradle’ as an offering to Goddess Vedha Nayaki.

This temple remains open from 5 AM to 1 PM in the morning and 4 PM to 8 PM in the evening.

Jaya Jaya Sankara Hara Sankara !!
